Who is Omayra Casamá

More than a spokesperson, she is an active guardian of her people

Omayra Casamá is an Emberá indigenous leader whose life and work are situated at the intersection of culture, community and future.

Born and raised in the territory of Ipetí Emberá, her story does not begin in institutions or titles, but in the daily fabric of her community: in care, in the transmission of knowledge and in the living relationship with the land. From there, it builds its leadership.

Unlike traditional visible and hierarchical models of leadership, Omayra's is quiet but firm. It is a leadership that is exercised through constant action, through presence and through responsibility to its people. She has dedicated much of her life to strengthening the role of women within her community, recognizing that in them lies a fundamental force for cultural continuity and collective well-being.

His work focuses on the preservation of Emberá traditions — craftsmanship, ancient medicine, knowledge of the territory — not as static elements of the past, but as living systems with value in the present. For Omayra, culture is not something that is kept; it is something that is practiced, shared and adapted without losing its essence.

At the same time, he clearly understands the contemporary challenges faced by indigenous communities: lack of access to economic opportunities, forced migration and the risk of loss of identity in new generations. Faced with this, their focus is not on resisting change, but rather on guiding it. It works so that new opportunities — such as cultural tourism, the commercialization of handicrafts or spaces for exchange — are developed from within, respecting the rhythms and values of the community.

Omayra is also a key figure in the collective processes that are taking shape today around initiatives such as the Sara Omi Foundation, where her territorial experience provides an essential dimension: the real connection with the community. She represents that bridge between strategic vision and everyday life.

Their presence reminds us of something fundamental: that true development does not occur when external solutions are imposed, but when communities strengthen what they already are. In that sense, Omayra doesn't just preserve culture; she projects it forward.

More than a spokesperson, she is an active guardian of her people. And in a world that often pushes towards homogenization, her work clearly affirms that identity, when cared for and valued, becomes a profound source of strength and future.
